ASHEVILLE — John Harwell, of Asheville, has been named an Eagle Scout, the highest advancement award of the Boy Scouts of America.

A member of Troop 3 of the Daniel Boone Council, Harwell is a senior at Asheville High. He constructed a bridge in the Alexander Mountain Bike Park as his Eagle service project.

Harwell is the son of Rebecca and Lee Harwell, of Asheville.

Approximately 5 percent of Boy Scouts attain the Eagle rank, which requires the candidate to earn 21 merit badges and complete a community service project.
